In Retirement (SIR) is an organization of retired and semi-retired men.
joined together to maintain old friendships, form new ones and share
the interests of retirement. Incorporated in 1959, the organization now
has about 22,000 members in 157 branches. There are no dues, and no
advocacy of political, religious or fraternal organizations.
For June Mario Vazquez, our Program Chairman, has arranged for Mike Banks a pilot of the U-2 spy plane which was the first operational air-borne vehicle in America’s program leading up to “The Corona Spy Satellites.” A U-2 was shot down over Russia on May 1, 1960 during the Cold War that created a big political problem between our countries. About that time, Fidel Castro was building a missile launching center with help from Russia. These missiles would easily reach the United States. President John F. Kennedy ordered a Naval Blockade that prevented Russian ships delivering the missiles. The US was flying U-2’s surveying the buildup of these centers. Mike will share his part in this critical part of our history.
